Lady in the Dark: Kurt Weill’s 1941 Cult Classic
Orchestra of St. Luke’s and MasterVoices join artistic forces to breathe new life into Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin’s 1941 Broadway musical, Lady in the Dark, last performed in New York in 1994. Four-time Tony Award nominee Victoria Clark stars as Liza, a successful magazine editor wrestling with her inner demons and desires. Unfulfilled in both her personal and professional life—and obsessed with an enchanting tune she can’t quite finish—Liza finds her way onto the psychoanalytic couch. Kurt Weill’s arresting score, with dazzling lyrics by Ira Gershwin, dissects her psyche in extended interludes that collide her neurotic real life with glamorous dreamscapes in which she works out her conflicting desires. By the end, she just may find her way out of the dark.
Recent collaborations between OSL and Mastervoices have included Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas starring Tony Award winners Kelli O’Hara and Victoria Clark in 2016 and Ricky Ian Gordon’s 27 starring Stephanie Blythe and Elizabeth Futral in 2017.
