Job purpose

The Manager of Youth Programs is a key leader of the Education and Community Engagement team for Youth Orchestra of St. Luke’s (YOSL), an after-school orchestral-instrumental instruction program focused on youth development. Must effectively manage multiple complex partnerships that involve internal and external staff and stakeholders, including: OSL musicians, teaching artists, community and school partners, and families.

The position also includes support of the Director of Education and Community in the creation, execution, and evaluation of the department’s major programs.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Develops curriculum, schedule, repertoire plan, and benchmarks for success in student learning and engagement, in collaboration with teaching faculty, OSL staff, students, and families.
  • Manages YOSL Teaching Faculty and OSL coaches; responsible for their ongoing professional development.
  • Coordinates details and daily schedule at each site; addresses specific site needs.
  • Communicates with parents/guardians about student progress and challenges; seeks opportunities for engaging families in the program.
  • Oversees YOSL budget, which includes processing invoices, managing payroll, and cash flow.
  • Coordinates in- and after-school YOSL programs through joint performances; collaborates with other youth orchestra programs that exist in NYC.
  • Supports the Director of Education and Community Engagement in strategic planning and execution of strategic plans.
  • Other duties as needed to support the Education and Community Engagement team, including collaborating on program designs and evaluation, helping write Free School Concerts teacher guides, assisting with pre- and post- OSL event production, representing OSL and YOSL at local and national conferences and convenings.


  • A minimum of three years of professional experience in an arts organization working in arts education; four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required
  • Ideal candidate will have familiarity with music education pedagogies, and the culture of youth orchestras and/or community music schools
  • Experience working with school music teachers, teaching artists, and students
  • Experience developing age-appropriate strategies to engage children at different stages through music
  • Strong knowledge of classical music
  • Knowledge and interest in El Sistema and other youth orchestra programs
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, time management, organizational, written language, and computer skills
  • Team player and self-motivator: ability to take initiative
  • Ability to delegate responsibility
  • Knowledge of state or national learning standards a plus
  • Available some nights and weekends
  • Knowledge in Spanish or Mandarin a plus

Working conditions

  • Use of an office phone, computer and internet is required.
  • A cell phone and remote access to e-mail and office files are strongly recommended, as many tasks take place offsite.

Physical requirements

  • Required to visit school sites, which may be in walking or driving distance.
  • Ability to carry instruments between sites.
  • On some occasions, it may be necessary for the Manager of Youth Programs to participate in program activities in support of the teaching faculty, which may include: playing an instrument, assisting with student coaching, leading music games, etc.
  • For documentation purposes, it may be necessary to take pictures or record classes.
