Rossini: Aureliano in Palmira

Bel Canto at Caramoor

As two warring armies brace for battle over this exquisite city in present-day Syria, Aureliano in Palmira explores the contentious love triangle of an invading Roman emperor (tenor Andrew Owens), a bold Palmyran queen (soprano Georgia Jarman), and her ally, the dashing Prince of Persia (mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford). Acclaimed as “Best Rediscovered Work” at last year’s International Opera Awards, this long-forgotten jewel receives its first U.S. performance.

Beethoven: Fidelio

Bel Canto at Caramoor

Beethoven’s Fidelio—the master’s only opera—explores themes common to his “middle period”: of personal sacrifice, heroism, and delayed triumph. The story follows the efforts of a determined wife in disguise (soprano Elza van den Heever), the struggles of her imprisoned political-activist husband (tenor Paul Groves), and a host of players from the reigning municipality who seek to keep him in chains.
