THE ST. LUKE'S YOUNG COMPOSERS CONCERT, HOSTED BY DANIEL BERNARD ROUMAIN, FEATURES CHAMBER WORKS BY YOUNG COMPOSERS AGES SEVEN TO 22, MONDAY, AUGUST 8, AT THE MICHAEL SCHIMMEL CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT PACE UNIVERSITY

Concert is part of the River to River Festival's "Summer Stars"

The Orchestra of St. Luke's presents its third annual St. Luke's Young Composers Concert, a program featuring chamber music works by participants in its Young Composers Development Program, performed by St. Luke's musicians, on Monday, August 8, at 7:30 pm, at the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University; tickets are free to the public. Hosted by St. Luke's Assistant Composer-in-Residence Daniel Bernard Roumain, the concert – unique in its presentation of professional musicians performing student works – is the culmination of St. Luke's Young Composers Development Program. Marking the first year that the program has included composers from across the country, this year's concert features chamber works by eight composers from four different states, who range in age from seven to 22, and two of whom – Wynne Bennett and Dave Harrington, both of New York City – participated in last year’s concert and are returning with new works. The other composers are: Ozie Cargile (Detroit, MI), Vassili Makavos (Phoenix, AZ), Julien Leitner (Portland, OR), Aaron Paul Lowe (NYC), Kenny Grohowski (NYC), and Daniel Barnidge (NYC).

Daniel Bernard Roumain "is creating a miracle with the [OSL's] Young Composers Program," said Allan Kozinn of The New York Times, talking about the 2004 concert. "With few signs that classical music can reach beyond its niche audience … Mr. Roumain has taken a handful of teenagers (and two people in their 20s), got them fired up about the possibilities of classical composition and inspired them to write short but probing, vital concert pieces."

The St. Luke's Young Composers Development Program, directed by Daniel Bernard Roumain, is a unique program that offers student composers, selected by Roumain with St. Luke's Composer-in-Residence Joan Tower, instruction integrated with contact and interaction with St. Luke’s musicians and administration, attendance at concerts by the Orchestra of St. Luke's and St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, and meetings with composers associated with St. Luke's new music series, Second Helpings.

The concert is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10. For information, call the Orchestra of St. Luke's, 212-594-6100. The Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University is located on Spruce Street between Park Row and Gold Street, near the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The event is part of the River to River Festival's "Summer Stars," showcasing young stars and classical music. The concert is presented in collaboration with the OSL, Pace University, David Watson, DBR Music Productions and in part funded by the generous support of Ellie Friedman.
