SAM WATERSTON IS THE RADIO VOICE OF THE ORCHESTRA OF ST. LUKE’S

December 2, 2004: Acclaimed film, television, and theater actor Sam Waterston is now the voice of New York’s Orchestra of St. Luke’s in the radio advertising for its 30th anniversary concert season. Beginning with radio spots promoting the orchestra’s December 9 concert at Carnegie Hall with conductor David Zinman and soprano Dawn Upshaw, and continuing with ongoing 2004-2005 St. Luke’s events in Carnegie Hall and Zankel Hall, the Law & Order star can be heard urging listeners to “hear America’s foremost chamber orchestra for yourself … and discover the wonderful Orchestra of St. Luke’s.” Sam Waterston’s St. Luke’s radio spots can be heard on 96.3FM WQXR and Bloomberg News Radio (WBBR/1130 AM).

St. Luke's Board Chairman Norman Benzaquen, a longtime friend of Mr. Waterston's, said, "After Sam’s participation in one of our Carnegie Hall concerts last year, he became even more involved and honored us by lending his voice on the air. We are all delighted to consider Sam a member of the St. Luke’s family.” Sam Waterston appeared as a guest artist with the orchestra and its principal conductor, Donald Runnicles, at Carnegie Hall in February of 2004, reading poetry ranging from Virgil to works by Auden and Brecht in an ambitious program of words and music titled “All the poet can do is to warn.”

In just the first two months of the season, since October, St. Luke’s has received major 30th anniversary praise: “In the last couple of years,” said Anne Midgette in The New York Times, “everyone I know, it seems, has come back from hearing the Orchestra of St. Luke’s with great excitement about the quality of the playing and the experience. And each time it has been a different concert.” And Ben Finane, reviewing a performance of Britten’s War Requiem with the Collegiate Chorale for Classics Today, said, “The real standout here was the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, which continues to cement its reputation as the best orchestra in New York City.”
